" Sri Suktam with Meaning and Description"

Sri Suktam

Sri Suktam is a vedic sloka addressed to Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth, Prosperity and Fertility. The Sri Suktam is a never failing mantra to invoke prosperity, goodness, health, wealth and well being of the person as well as the whole family itself.

The presence of Sri Mahalakshmi on Lord Sri Vishnu’s chest, at the Heart symbolises the embodiment of Love, from which devotion to God or Bhakti flows from. It is through Love/Bhakti or Lakshmi that the atma or soul is able to reach God or Vishnu. Sri or Lakshmi is also the personification of theSpiritual energy within us and universe called Kundalini. She is also called the Goddess of Fortune.

Lakshmi is prosperity, and all the wealth of life is nothing but prosperity. All forms of happiness, satisfaction, abundance and status come under Lakshmi, the Divine Glory. The Sri Sukta is the invocation of God Himself as the great glory of His creation, His lordliness, sovereignty and supremacy.

Sri Suktam is recited to bring bliss to the family, to those who recite it with devout intent and discipline. It is widely believed that recitation of this powerful slokam bestows an unerring power unto the character and personality of those who recite it, and to their general well being.

Lakshmi, the eternal consort of Lord Narayana has been referred as ‘Sri‘ meaning the personification of auspicious and royal qualities. Her description appears in the Sri Sukta, where she has been lauded in golden words and in glorious terms…Just as there is no difference between Power-Holder (Vishnu) and Power (Lakshmi)…She is the presiding deity of all divine manifestation.

The word Veda means knowledge, and the Vedas are considered the most sacred scripture of Hinduism referred to as sruti, meaning what was heard by or revealed to the Rishis or Seers. The most holy hymns and mantras put together into four collections called the Rig, Sama, Yajur, and Atharva Vedas.Rigveda is a Veda in form of Sukti's, which mean 'beautiful statements'.

A collection of very beautifully composed incantations itself is a Sukta. The Sukta is also synonymous to Richas. 'Rit' means - an incantation that contains praises and Veda means knowledge.Suktas are chanted in Vedic hymns (songs). They are in praise of different forms of the God/Goddess, which are known as “SUKTAMS”.Sri Suktam is one of the pancha suktas such as Purusha Suktam,Narayana Suktam,Sri Suktam,Bhu Suktam and Nila Suktam.

For the adoration of Lakshmi, there is no hymn equal to the Sri Sukta...The letters, syllables and words in the verses of Sri Sukta, collectively form the sound body of Lakshmi, the presiding deity of this Hymn. As it has come to us from the consciousness state of the Rishi (seer), the substance is Chit, the creative energy in Vaikhari or gross from of sound.

The universe is conceived and born of sound. Light is nothing but a sound of a particular frequency. All that we see in this worlds in solid, liquid, or gaseous state has emanated from sound. Even our mind is the crystal of sound. Nama (name) is sound from which rupa (form) has come. To cut it short, Sri Sukta is a Siddha Mantra and is a radiant mass of energy. By proper Sadhana, the jiva can raise itself to a divine status. But to attain this, it is very vital that the meaning of the Mantras are correctly understood, intoned and also remembered at the time of recitation.
